It's rather quiet on here to be honest, I joined a little while ago, and this

Right, I'm not 100% sure if this will help you, but, try installing ffmpeg 
manually on your ubuntu installation.  I'm using Ubuntu myself, and every 
time I do a fresh install of it, I encounter codec/encoding problems until I 
do this.

The site I've linked says that this is because the packages that Ubuntu has 
are limited in what they have enabled "for various boring legal reasons"... 
Guess archlinux has it all enabled.
