What settings did you choose in the render dialog? Just to be on the safe side: 
video rendering actually is enabled or is it disabled by accident? There's a 
checkbox for video, but I don't remember if it's for enabling or disabling 
video rendering...

I've tested this command and produces right a video file:
$ melt clip.ogv -consumer avformat:result.mp4 vcodec=libx264

What (and how) can I test about a sample Kdenlive project?
