At least partially answering my own question with respect to the new
qtblend transition: it can be found under the name "Composite and
transform" ... and not "qtblend" or something like this.
BTW ... anybody alive here...?? ;)

Now when I run Kdenlive I see two problems:
1. the "qtblend" transition does not show up in the transition list
pane. However, the avfilter effects stuff correctly shows up...
2. the icons are a mess between updated breeze icon theme system icons
as recently installed through Kubuntu updates and Kdenlive's own
icons. My understanding is that since I installed the Kdenlive icons
to my local folders they should show up correctly, superseding the
system icons in any case.
Any idea as to what I'm doing wrong?
