I have a similar problem in that I also observe this download upload cycle in
my IMAP folders.
It only occures if filtering for IMAP messages is enabled; especially when
messages have an attachment I end up with dozens of copies of that message
until I manually cancel the message transfer.
And indeed it bugs me for years now ...
