If you use the mouse to click into the pane you can continue using the mouse.
If you want to jump to the next unread messages, there are shortcuts, CTRL++ I
think.
If you want to jump to a folder, there is "j" as shortcut.
If you want to navigate the message list: use right-cursor for "next message"
and down-cursor for "scroll down message-text".
Using both, up and down, as well as left and right is far more comfortable
because it saves you a lot of clicking or tabing in order to change between the
message-list and the preview-pane.
