This seems to be fixed in KDE4.1
First of all, the password dialog is not shown by simply selecting an
unencrypted mail, you have to klick a link-button within the mail. Additionally
the password dialog is a modal popup, so it's not possible to do anything else
in the kmail window.
I tried selecting another mail anyways and kmail doesn't crash when the
password dialog disappears (either on cancel or entering password).
