I think this is resolved now in kmail 1.10.0. I tested it with svn r854573. I
sent a new email to myself using another client and having kmail docked to the
system tray and configured to check the imap account for new email every 1
minute. After one minute, the system tray icon was correctly updated to show
that there is one new mail.
