I am facing the same problem with KDE 4.2 on Kubuntu Intrepid.
In my case, a word document in a forwarded message has a MIME type of
application/octet-stream.
There has to be a simple solution as saving the attachment to disk "restores"
its MIME type or at least makes it openable by a simple click.
