I have this same issue.  KDE 4.2.3 from Gentoo packages.  My Desktop does this
behavior, my Laptop does not.  Both have kmail configured for (Google's) IMAP
access.  Opening knotes on my laptop does NOT open kmail.  On my Desktop it
does.
