I was able to fix it after two or three attempts at resetting things to default. Things that are not 'normal' with my installation are the KDE add-on to Mint 8, which is Gnome-based. Also, my actual mail files reside on a separate 'userspace' partition, and are linked into the normal mail directory in my user account.
