Just this morning I had a hanging send using kmail 1.13.5 from the openSUSE 11.3 KDE 4.5 Repos (KDE:/Release:/45/openSUSE_11.3), Package kmail-4.4.9-1.2.x86_64. It seems that is not necessary to start kmail/kontact when logging in from a remote host. It seems to be sufficient just to start the KDE4 session, which I my case starts kalarm as the only application of the PIM suite.
