They have been discussed in detail earlier on but this thread has grown long. First of all, KDE3 is alive and well in the Trinity project. There are a number of production installations which do not feel KDE4 is ready for production usage. This is not the place to have that debate. Some feel it is, some feel it is not. We cannot judge another's environment unless we are in it. The bucket system was set up to accommodate both and prevent taking advantage of either "camp." The idea was for contributors to contribute to whichever bucket they preferred. If the KDE4 bucket filled before the KDE3 bucket, as we suspect will happen, all funds then flow to the KDE3 bucket since it is the dependent project. If the KDE3 bucket never fills, the project, at least from that developer dies. What we wanted to avoid was KDE4 users paying into the KDE3 development and then there not being enough left over for the KDE4 port. Similarly, we did not want KDE3 users stymied if there was enough contribution to do the KDE3 project but not enough for KDE4. Hence the dual bucket approach.
