While certainly useful for your mentioned scenario (adding types without rebuilding Xavante), your patch assumes too much about the underlining infrastructure (something close to Unix with something like Apache installed). I understand Xavante's mime types are fewer than possible, but a better approach would be updating the current mime.lua file with the new types.
