In the FWIW department I have a reasonably clean cut-out of the login
widget code from XDM in a recent XFree86 release. I needed to do this
in an attempt to put together a Kerberized login implementation for
SGI.
I didn't want to tear out all the SGI X stuff and replace it with
XFree86 and this seemed to be the best way to get something that would
replace the clogin binary for SGI's implementation of XDM. Since I
needed to implement the Hurderos authentication/authorization strategy
I have reasonably clean hooks for intercepting the identifier and
password.
It might be something that could save you a few steps although it
needs some more additional work.

Let me know and I would be happy to ship you a tarball of sources.
Have a good weekend.
