As suggested, I linked kadmind against libefence - which makes it stop really early:
Try
(gdb) set env EF_ALLOW_MALLOC_0 1
first.
Thanks! It's running again - further results will be reported...
Still - the lines electric fence complains about will always result in an allocation of 0 bytes (even if init_common is used somewhere else in the code ...)
