I think appl/simple actually does protect messages but appl/sample does not.

It looks like the uses of krb5_gen_portaddr() and krb5_gen_replay_name() in sim_client.c don't do anything after commit dcb853ac32779b173f39e19c0f24b0087de85771 so they can be removed (I just didn't realize it at the time).
