Okay, I'll try to see what the tools say, but so far it happens only when the computer is left at the login for a while. This is the page where various users can login, so technically only background processes are running.
I've tried multiple times to catch it in the act, but never successful. /tmp is either at 0.1% or 100%. When at 100%, it's very difficult to diagnose anything because the computer is going haywire. If I just reboot and don't login, it still happens on its own after a day or so.
