I am also have this same, or a very similar problem. Ever since 12.04 version 43 I have not been ale to get any of the newer version to work on my system. I am running on a Dell Optiplex 745 12.04 version 41.
If I attempt to use a newer version, after Boot the system goes to the next screen and the lights continue to run for a time while the system indicates disk access. After a while the lights stop, disk access stops and the system appears to freeze, nothing works. I have left the system for over 10 minutes to see if something is happening in the background, there is no indication of this. After that time my only option is to switch off the power, the power down button is not active. I have no idea what is causing this problem, but it sounds very similar to those reported above. Once I start the system in version 41, everything appears to be working normally. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1184154 Title: After last Kernel Update (3.2.0-44) system hangs on startup Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: My system hangs when I startup. The login screen shows up, but when I try to enter the password, after 1-3 chars the system hangs (keyboard and mouse freeze, system does not respond to anything except reset). I now started the system with the older 3.2.0-41 kernel and it works. I also attach a dmesg-file from a previous startup. The only thing I noticed myself are the odd NFSD-messages at the end, which I did not find in the newer dmesg (with patch 41 kernel).
