Thanks , Christopher. I upgraded the BIOS to version P08ABK via Windows 8, but now I have worse problems.
First I got an "Image failed to verify with acess denied" error as soon as I turned the computer on. I then ran boot-repair from an usb ubuntu boot, and I now have ubuntu working. (see http://paste.ubuntu.com/5952650/ for the repair info). However, I've completely lost access to windows 8, with the error very similar to http://askubuntu.com/questions/280339/windows-8-wont-boot-via-grub-after-intalling-12-10-with-boot-repair (running the suggested fix does not work in my case though). The black screen issue hasn't appeared so far, though.
