Cormac, This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com /daily-live/current/ .
If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report: apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number> ** Tags removed: kernel-bug-exists-upstream kernel-bug-exists-upstream-3.4.0-030400-generic-pae ** Tags added: bio-outdated-a12 ** Tags removed: bio-outdated-a12 ** Tags added: bios-outdated-a12 ** Tags removed: kernel-bug-exists-upstream-v3.3.7-precise ** Tags added: kernel-bug-exists-upstream-v3.3.7 ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1002824 Title: Ubuntu shutdown/restart failure Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Bug reported as per instructions from Christopher M. Penalver (penalvch) Shutdown and Reboot failure on Dell XPS/nVidia 295.49/Ubuntu 12.04 Sometimes "sudo reboot -h now" works, sometime not. Had the same problem on 11.10 so I didn't install nVidia driver on a clean 12.04 install but problem was still there. Installed the nVidia driver because it didn't make a difference. Tried stopping various unity processes using "system monitor" before a reboot (sudo reboot -h now) and this seems to work but it is terribly inefficient The unity processes stopped: unity-files-daemon unity-applications-daemon I then tried it using the ubuntu "shutdown" button after stopping the same processes and it also seems to have worked WORKAROUND: Reverted to non-mainline kernel "linux-headers-3.2.0-25 -generic-pae" and removed all nvidia drivers. Operating on nouveau graphics drivers shutdown and Restart work perfectly.
