suspend/hibernate resume doesn't work on desktop

Bug description:
when i resume from suspend/hibernation the monitor remains pitch black and
the power light on the monitor indicates it's still in standby.
I am using a desktop computer with a nvidia 8600. I am running ubuntu 9.04
