By installing kernels using .deb packages I have learned that the issue is resolved between kernel 3.13.2 and 3.13.3. I will now try to reverse bisect the commits in between these kernel version (which I have never done before).
As a side note, I could not test the issue in kernel 3.13.1; I got completely different behaviour: after a low-res xubuntu splash screen, the screen became garbled, after which it became completely green. The system hung completely (I needed to hold the power button to switch it off). This issue could be reproduced.
