This laptop suffers from the same issue as just about every Intel laptop
I've used. xbacklight will not adjust brightness unless
acpi_backlight=none is set in /etc/default/grub and the grub
configuration rebuilt to use it as a kernel command line option.
As a separate but related issue, the backlight keys do not work at all
for this laptop, and I haven't yet figured out a solution for that.
