Ok, I just tried 4.8 rc4:

vincas@vinco:~$ uname -a
Linux vinco 4.8.0-040800rc4-generic #201608312129 SMP Thu Sep 1 01:31:59 UTC
2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Still, screen back light cannot be controlled with keyboard unless I add
acpi_osi= argument.

Title:
  Asus N551JM screen brightness fn keys not working unless acpi_osi=
  kernel argument is set

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Hi,

  I've found solution for screen brightness keys issue in ask ubuntu
  [1], which is simply to add "acpi_osi=" kernel argument.

  If troubleshooting is already done, solution discovered, could we have
  some proper implementation in kernel itself, so user should not need
  to fiddle with kernel arguments?
