I have reason to believe that this issue is now resolved for me with Linux 3.8.0-31, which appears to be the healthiest kernel so far without resorting to trying the mainline kernel.
After already a number of boot-ups, I'm pleased to say that I've not suffered from any "black screen of death" problems as I did with the kernels mentioned in the title of this bug report. For me at least, this bug may be closed. This happened every so often, and despite it being immensely annoying, I could "live" with it. However, upgrading to linux 3.8.0-27 resulted in a totally unbootable system. It fails repeatedly and NEVER succeeds. I persistently arrive at the aforementioned "black screen of death". I had hoped that upgrading to linux 3.8.0-29 might have fixed the problem...alas it did not. So I am still unable to boot into my system. Only by selecting linux 3.8.0-26 under advanced options in GRUB does it let me arrive at the lightdm login screen...but please note that, as I had said above, even this suffers from the occassional "black screen of death". The problem has thus existed since upgrading to raring 13.04, but has ultimately failed resulting in an unbootable system in linux 3.8.0-27 & 3.8.0-29. I hope the above helps.
