I just installed and am running 4.9.0-040900rc8-generic, thanks. No, this
laptop has had this problem for some time. I was running OpenSuse for some
time immediately before switching back to Ubuntu. I don't remember ever
having the issue with Leap but it locked up many times when I switched to
Tumbleweed (I'm sorry I haven't kept track of the versions). So, this is
definitely peculiar to this hardware.

Before installing the new kernel, I used compressed air to blow as much
dust from inside the laptop as I could (it's relatively new so there wasn't
much) thinking it might have been heat-related. I, also, entered the BIOS
and disabled any hardware-related settings that I didn't need (there
weren't many). When it locked up this evening (while idle), I downloaded
the 4.9 kernel and did the install.

I'll let you know how it works out.
