I've just discovered that, despite my earlier testing, the bug is now
also happening on linux-image-4.9.71-040971-generic. I'm going to mark
as incomplete once more until I can further narrow down the issue.

One other element that might be relevant is that I'm using two video
ports: an HDMI port for video, and a DisplayPort cable for audio. In my
current round of tests, running both streams over one cable seems to
address the issue (but has not always done so), and changing to an
interlaced resolution (1080 to 1080i) also seems to fix it (the regular
screen is jittery, but YouTube video is clear).

I will test for a few days and with different kernels to see if I can
isolate the problem and update the bug with my results.

Title:
HDMI audio makes loud popping noises while playing audio

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
When playing audio via HDMI, I get very loud pops and/or periods of
silence. The frequency of this behaviour seems to go way up while
playing video with a lot of motion, and especially YouTube videos. I
can reliably reproduce the problem by playing the video
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt9UZo32KMk and maximising/minimising
  the video size rapidly.

Testing older kernels, I can reproduce the problem on the linux-
  image-4.10.0-041000rc1-generic from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/, but the previous version, linux-
image-4.9.71-040971-generic, plays audio without any problems.

The problem didn't exist on 17.04; it only started happening after I
  upgraded to 17.10. (I know 17.04 had a 4.10 kernel; I'm at a loss to
explain the difference unless the zesty kernel was patched.)
