As expected I had a hard time trying to test the latest upstream kernel.
Haven't found a way to do it without running into the expected "out-of-
tree modules" uninstall, specifically nvidia (with bbswitch).

Having been into this terrain before, I don't think I will proceed to
uninstall the nvidia modules given that it might bring me _other_ video-
related problems on my work laptop. I guess for now I can live with an
external USB mouse. Once I move work into a new box I'll go ahead and
re-try the procedure.

Thanks for the help and sorry for that :$

Synaptics' touchpad not detected in 'CyberpowerPC Tracer II' laptop
after kernel, system and multiple packages upgrade (for instance:
  CUDA, libinput, etc.

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Installed ubuntu 16.04 a while ago and touchpad was working. It does work as
well on LiveCDs.
After upgrading kernel and some system packages (i've even removed
xorg-input-synaptics), touchpad does not even show in `xinput list`. USB mouse
works though.

I've skimmed dozens of pages in askubuntu and stackexchange to no avail:

Most of these revolved around tampering with the
`GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=` argument in `/etc/default/grub` and removing
`xserver-xorg-input-synaptics` package along with confs.
