deeks9000:

1) Regarding the BIOS Error, you are welcome to update your BIOS to see
if this provides resolution.

2) The next step is to fully commit bisect from kernel 4.13 to 4.15 in
order to identify the last good kernel commit, followed immediately by
the first bad one. This will allow for a more expedited analysis of the
root cause of your issue. Could you please do this following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ?

Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions, or providing a commit
from a kernel version bisect is not fully commit bisecting.

Also, the kernel release names are irrelevant for the purposes of
bisecting.

It is most helpful that after the fix commit (not kernel version) has
been identified, you then mark this report Status Confirmed.

Thank you for your help.

Title:
[Compaq Presario A900 Notebook PC] ~5 minutes to boot or shutdown

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
SCENARIO: I have just upgraded to 18.04 from 17.10

  PROBLEM PACKAGE (?): linux-modules-4.15.0-20-generic

REPORT FROM 'dmesg' shows this typical error:

  [ 899.040146] [drm:drm_atomic_helper_wait_for_dependencies [drm_kms_helper]]
*ERROR* [CRTC:41:pipe B] flip_done timed out
  [ 909.280160] [drm:drm_atomic_helper_wait_for_dependencies [drm_kms_helper]]
*ERROR* [PLANE:35:plane B] flip_done timed out

  BASIC DETAILS:
'flip_done' timed out does not sound good to me! Is this the reason for the
extremely long boot time observed? Approximate boot time is 5 minutes! Long
delays on shutdown also.

The new system works great once it is up and running! My laptop is 10
years old (Comapaq Presario A900), but it has worked well with Ubuntu
over the years and I was hoping that the 18.04 would have a *faster*
boot time, so I was excited to install the new system. Alas, it now
suffers from excessively long boot time which I am convinced is due to
a timeout error. But I do not have enough knowledge to know exactly
what exactly is 'timing out'? (Integrated graphics card possibly?)

  Graphics card details:
Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary)
(rev 03)

  Thanks
