This is an identical issue to those reported for Realtek, but I have not found an existing report for Intel. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1779817 This was no a problem in 16.04 or 17.10 with the identical hardware. 18.04 was installed clean.
