Happens when not doing anything, return to find frozen or freezing
windows (last case Google Chrome was greyed out, then Terminal became
unresponsive and finally whole session, no response from Caps Lock so
hard reset performed.
I would expect it's one of the following:
Google Chrome plugin (need to use for work)
Skype (from Microsoft Skype directly, not Snap which caused issues
immediately!)
Virtual Call Centre - deb package direct from source https://vcc.live/
I have no way to know whether any of the above caused this issue or
whether it's compositing desktop demons at play, so if anyone can
interpret the above, I can chase up with any 3rd party as required
(presuming there is no Ubuntu/kernel/X problem at play here)
