Kernel upgrade failing, trying to install Xenial Kernel, I am running

& 5.0GHz Acer Nplify wireless LAN (802.11a/b/g/n); BT 4.0; OS : Linux
Mint 17.3 Rosa; Kernel: 4.4.0-96 (64 bit) MATE 1.12.0
As you can see, I am running lts-Trusty, it has repeatedly tried to
install a kernel upgrade for lts-Xenial. It has filled up my boot,
and I am getting messages to delete files to make room or something
like that. I am a novice user. Now my software manager also does not
work, it is failing installation of new software.
When the kernel upgrade to 4.4.0-109 fails I get the following error
messages :

That seems to me like it means that 4.4.0-109 is installed. When I
reboot however, it does not offer for me to use this kernel, the other
kernel versions are offered. I made a forum thread at the Mint
forums, asking about this, and someone asked if I could please file a
