.. as recommended I tried 3.14.79-031479-generic; giving me radeon.ko version 2.37.0 and the screen is o.k. No flickering. btw. I had the same result e.g. with "puppy_tahr 6.0.5 boot CD" which has the same radeon-version (2.37.0). My guess: the flickering-problem starts with radeon 2.39.0 upward. See my table above (a little messed-up due to lacking blanks).

NO flickering in textmode, nice grafic, NO flickering xrandr tells: 1680x1050 60.1 so I must stay on old ubuntu 14.04.05 ???
