Aurosutru, thank you for your comments. Regarding them: >"Chris, downloading an .iso with the slow EDGE Inet connection available here >in rural India is not feasible."
Well, it would be feasible, it would just take a while. However, if you download Xubuntu, it would be a bit smaller, than Ubuntu: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/daily-live/current/ As well, one may download it if the connection keeps dropping out via a terminal: wget -c http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/daily-live/current/trusty-desktop-amd64.iso This will resume a dropped connection where it left off so you don't have to keep starting from scratch. >"Would running apport with the current Ubuntu version and the new BIOS be helpful?" Unfortunately, no. >"I can probably update the kernel to the latest upstream kernel if that would be useful too, though the 3.8.0-35 kernel now in the system was only made available as an auto-upgrade a few days ago." You are welcome to test the latest repo kernel. However, if it doesn't work, having tested the latest release would still need to occur. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1264270 Title: Regular black screens since automatic kernel upgrade Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Since upgrading the kernel along with other automatic software updates (about 200MB download) the video of this system regularly blanks after a few minutes of operation or shows a black screen with white text having machine gibberish that looks like a log file with seconds at the left edge. Resetting the display screen to never turn off automatically doesn't help. Unplugging the laptop's monitor and plugging it in again will usually restore normal functioning, but only for a while. This sort of problem occurred the previous two times automatic kernel upgrades were installed and was fixed by a display manager update that followed about a week later, at least in one case. Maybe three times is a charm and the underlying problem will now be solved. Thanks. I'm filing another bug regarding a crash that occurred during one of the video hang-ups when monitor unplugging didn't help.
