Tried again with Ubuntu 18.04 upgraded the kernal to
5.5.0-050500-generic still having problems, also tried the following
drivers

As per the link from this page

They didn't work but then again these are drivers for vega-64 rather
than vega-M

  On a fresh install of vanilla Ubuntu 19.04 sound over HDMI is distorted 
(unusable). Problem does not occur with a fresh install of Ubuntu 18.10
