When the lightdm login screen appears, the external monitor turns off and does not come back on after login. xrandr indicates that the monitor is on even though it clearly isn't. This is a known bug in the 3.0 kernel which has been fixed in the 3.1 kernel, but the author wasn't specific about which one of several patches fixed the problem. The workaround is to either use xrandr or the display settings (which are harder to use in Oneiric since the display indicator was removed) to turn the monitor off and back on again.
