** Description changed:

I'm running 20.04 and got the alert there was a FW update pending, so I
  ran it but it's failing:

➜ sudo fwupdmgr update --force -y
Upgrade available for Thunderbolt controller in Dell dock from 40.00 to 43.00
Downloading 43.00 for Thunderbolt controller in Dell dock...

Updating Thunderbolt controller in Dell dock… ]
  Writing… [***************************************]
could not start thunderbolt device upgrade: could not write to
'nvm_authenticate': Input/output error

I have also logged this against upstream fwupd, but haven't got anywhere as
yet (good for reference though): https://github.com/fwupd/fwupd/issues/2689
