Amd gpu freezes / crashes on load

Bug description:
I have had several lockups of the amd gpu. The full screen freezes and
my pointer is mostly still able to move. But no refreshing of the rest
of the UI. So my system-monitor graphs on the top are stuck. Mostly
I'm able to switch to terminal (ctrl-alt-f6) and also going to login
window (ctrl-alt-f1) is possible. But login in or trying to restart
gnome is not possible. Full restart is needed.
In this instance itself it manifested a little bit different. The
lockup happened, but it tried to recover itself by killing the full
session and going back to the login screen.
