Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report.

Unfortunately I didn't understand the problem very well. It seems to me
that this could be a local configuration issue, although you mentioned
that this was working before Impish. Also, I noticed that you marked
the bug as Invalid for bind9. Since it is extremely unlikely that this
is a Linux kernel bug, I will go ahead and mark the Linux kernel and the
Ubuntu tasks as Invalid as well.

If you are still experiencing a problem, feel free to explain what is
happening. A reproducer would also go a long way here.

Since there is not enough information in your report to begin triage or to
differentiate between a local configuration problem and a bug in Ubuntu, I
am marking this bug as "Incomplete". We would be grateful if you would:
provide a more complete description of the problem, explain why you
believe this is a bug in Ubuntu rather than a problem specific to your
system, and then change the bug status back to "New".

For local configuration issues, you can find assistance here:

Title:
sub sub domain names not properly resolved

Status in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in bind9 package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
I have a local lan with a libvirt server and on that a vpn
  I have a wildcard sub domain at freedns.afraid.org (sub.hostname.com)
that has a kvm and vpn sub sub domain names. (sub.sub.hostname.com)

If i ping the sub sub hostname outside my local lan i get my external IP
address.
but also if i ping from within my local lan network
dig and nslookup do a resolve to my local ip.
But ping and applications like openvpn and libvirt cant connect to the local
application.

I worked around it by registering two sub domains at
freedns.afraid.org those are resolved correctly to the local IP
  address.

  No logs due to privacy.
