To understand the minutia here could we get the /var/log/dpkg.log* /var/log/apt/term.log* and /var/log/apt/history.log* sections for the period when this update was applied. This should show us what happened any this was triggered. Also could you indicate the type of upgrade in play and how it was triggered; for example was this an apt-get dist- upgrade?
