Solved. I noted that in my various ... sudo update-grub attempts, there was continous mention of grub not being able to be found etc
So, i copied and pasted the grub conditions from a known good pc with the same OS and version to this pc with the problem,,,,,,and low and behold, all is good again !!!!!
