Title:
Latest update breaks booting
Status in linux-firmware package in Ubuntu:
Expired
Bug description:
Regular package updates today brought these packages (and a few
libpam-XXX):
grub-common:amd64 (2.04-1ubuntu26.2, 2.04-1ubuntu26.3)
grub2-common:amd64 (2.04-1ubuntu26.2, 2.04-1ubuntu26.3)
grub-pc:amd64 (2.04-1ubuntu26.2, 2.04-1ubuntu26.3)
grub-pc-bin:amd64 (2.04-1ubuntu26.2, 2.04-1ubuntu26.3)
linux-firmware:amd64 (1.187.2, 1.187.3)
After the following reboot, the machine would no longer come up. It
got past Grub, but instead of Ubuntu logo appearing a second later,
screen would stay entirely black. I waited at least 5 minutes, no
change. I ended this with the power button.
Subsequent tries in recovery mode and/or with the previous kernel
didn't boot, either. The same machine would boot off an installation
medium (USB pen drive) or the other connected hard disk just fine.
Boot drive selection was done in BIOS.
After a lot of back and forth, I ended up downgrading the above
packages using the root shell in recovery mode: linux-firmware to
v1.187 (v1.187.2 was not available), all four Grub packages to
2.04-1ubuntu26.2.
With this, machine boots fine again.
