After upgrading to Ubuntu 24.04, I frequently get a complete kernel
stoppage. In the middle of doing any random task, the entire laptop
freezes: no mouse movements, no Ctrl-Alt-F1, no Ctrl-Alt-Backspace,
nothing. Whatever the last content of the screen was just remains there
as a static image.
Logs: There is nothing reported in /var/log/kern.log just prior to the
crash; the system simply seems to stop in its tracks. There are no
relevant messages in desg or syslog either.
To reproduce: It doesn't seem to be triggered by what I am doing at the
time, i.e., it occurs at random times.
I assume the bug is in the kernel itself (linux-image-6.8.0-51-generic),
or perhaps in a module, as nothing in userspace should create a complete
shutdown.
I realize this report doesn't do much to pinpoint the location of the
bug; please advise on what I should do to collect more information.
