I removed MUTTER_DEBUG_DISABLE_TRIPLE_BUFFERING from the /etc/environment file and the system booted properly. But when I removed the other line MUTTER_DEBUG_USE_KMS_MODIFIERS=0 the issue reappeared. So adding MUTTER_DEBUG_USE_KMS_MODIFIERS=0 in the /etc/environment file is the present work around for this issue. I wanted to pass this info to the other members who are facing this issue so that atleast they can move forward and use Gnome until the bug is fixed. So far I have seen no work around posted anywhere so put it here. Members please do confirm if this work around helped.

Since the update the PC just boots to a black screen. It worked fine before the software updates. I have managed to get a usable screen (but wrong size etc) with online help using Esc key on bootup. But the bug persists when the PC is restarted. I have an NVIDIA GT218 graphics card and Ubuntu tells me that "all available drivers are already installed". lsb_release -rd No LSB modules are available.
