It's a race condition in sddm; I have no way how to accurately express which hardware is more affected. Any comments would be based upon sampling bias.
I will say the same thing happened in gdm and I made a gdm code change to fix it. Based on how the race condition works another option is to include the DRM modules in the initramfs. This should cause them to be finished loading by the time sddm starts (which is after initramfs is done). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2125854 Title: Black screen with SDDM Status in SDDM: New Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in sddm package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I am running Kubuntu 25.04. I have had increasingly severe boot problems in the last couple of weeks. Everything seems to go fine, but instead of the login greeter, I get a black screen, sometimes with text, but maybe a blank cursor, or with a few very dull lines of terminal text, depending on the boot parameters. The only way to proceed is to do Alt+PrScr then R, then switch the TTY. At present I think the kernel is to blame. At one point, I thought that maybe secure boot or firmware updates were the cause, but that no longer seems likely. For a while, booting in recovery mode or with the splash screen disabled allowed boot to complete. Now it almost always fails. Thankfully, I kept some old kernels. Using two versions back, I was able to boot (still with splash disabled - haven't tried restoring that yet). Here's the current info. Ubuntu 6.14.0-28.28-generic 6.14.8 Some other hints. Occasionally I've ended up with the following as the only information on screen: Starting systemd-backlight:amdgpu-bl1.service - Load/Save Screen Backlight Brightness of backlight:amdgpu_bl1... Finished systemd-backlight:amdgpu-bl1.service - Load/Save Screen Backlight Brightness of backlight:amdgpu_bl1. I can confirm that the backlight on this laptop has been wonky in other ways, randomly resetting to a low brightness on a regular basis. I also tried changing grub to use "nomodeset". That seems to boot more reliably, but then my external monitors connected to my docking station no longer work.
