This is now working after updating. I potentially caused the updates to not get installed properly due to the presence of a third-party unoffical dkms module (applesmc-next to try and get battery charge threshold functionality working). This module wasn't building for the newer kernel so removed it for the older kernel and ran updates. Following a restart Wifi now connects
