I tried a 12.04 bootable USB stick. The laptop immediately boots the USB stick without prompting for the hard disk password (normally, it does so just before Grub).
After Ubuntu is booted, the hard drive is not accessible. dmesg shows many errors as follows: [ 27.496687] ata1.00: irq_stat 0x40000001 [ 27.496689] ata1.00: failed command: READ DMA EXT [ 27.496693] ata1.00: cmd 25/00:08:a8:32:cf/00:00:1d:00:00/e0 tag 0 dma 4096 in [ 27.496694] res 51/04:08:a8:32:cf/00:00:1d:00:00/00 Emask 0x1 (device error) [ 27.496696] ata1.00: status: { DRDY ERR } [ 27.496697] ata1.00: error: { ABRT } [ 27.496873] ata1.00: supports DRM functions and may not be fully accessible [ 27.497152] ata1.00: supports DRM functions and may not be fully accessible [ 27.497205] ata1.00: configured for UDMA/33 [ 27.497212] ata1: EH complete [ 27.497292] ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0 [ 27.497293] ata1.00: irq_stat 0x40000001 [ 27.497295] ata1.00: failed command: READ DMA EXT [ 27.497299] ata1.00: cmd 25/00:08:a8:32:cf/00:00:1d:00:00/e0 tag 0 dma 4096 in [ 27.497300] res 51/04:08:a8:32:cf/00:00:1d:00:00/00 Emask 0x1 (device error) [ 27.497302] ata1.00: status: { DRDY ERR } [ 27.497303] ata1.00: error: { ABRT } [ 27.497481] ata1.00: supports DRM functions and may not be fully accessible [ 27.497756] ata1.00: supports DRM functions and may not be fully accessible [ 27.497811] ata1.00: configured for UDMA/33 [ 27.497818] ata1: EH complete [ 27.497899] ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0 [ 27.497900] ata1.00: irq_stat 0x40000001 [ 27.497902] ata1.00: failed command: READ DMA EXT [ 27.497906] ata1.00: cmd 25/00:08:a8:32:cf/00:00:1d:00:00/e0 tag 0 dma 4096 in [ 27.497907] res 51/04:08:a8:32:cf/00:00:1d:00:00/00 Emask 0x1 (device error) [ 27.497909] ata1.00: status: { DRDY ERR } [ 27.497910] ata1.00: error: { ABRT } [ 27.498084] ata1.00: supports DRM functions and may not be fully accessible [ 27.498365] ata1.00: supports DRM functions and may not be fully accessible [ 27.498420] ata1.00: configured for UDMA/33 [ 27.498427] ata1: EH complete [ 27.498507] ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0 [ 27.498510] ata1.00: irq_stat 0x40000001 [ 27.498512] ata1.00: failed command: READ DMA EXT [ 27.498515] ata1.00: cmd 25/00:08:a8:32:cf/00:00:1d:00:00/e0 tag 0 dma 4096 in [ 27.498516] res 51/04:08:a8:32:cf/00:00:1d:00:00/00 Emask 0x1 (device error) [ 27.498518] ata1.00: status: { DRDY ERR } [ 27.498520] ata1.00: error: { ABRT } [ 27.498733] ata1.00: supports DRM functions and may not be fully accessible [ 27.499000] ata1.00: supports DRM functions and may not be fully accessible [ 27.499052] ata1.00: configured for UDMA/33 [ 27.499060] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE [ 27.499065] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Sense Key : Aborted Command [current] [descriptor] [ 27.499071] Descriptor sense data with sense descriptors (in hex): [ 27.499075] 72 0b 00 00 00 00 00 0c 00 0a 80 00 00 00 00 00 [ 27.499089] 1d cf 32 a8 [ 27.499095] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Add. It may matter that this SSD has a password to be entered at bootup; perhaps it would be necessary for the OS to send this password again to the hard drive during resume.
