Some kernels are a lot more reliable and some USB3 devices are just unreliable.
You need to confirm that that device works fine under windows. I have recently had the strange situation of a HDD caddy which keeps disconnecting under windows but no issues under linux. (different computers) So OS is not the only factor. Sometimes it's the device or the USB chipset.
