Christopher, your first link is unreachable. http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/63af08us.txt has a good description of the BIOS versions, but I was unable to find a suitable non Windows installer, which was confirmed by the Lenovo forums. I do not have Windows. At least one person with my specific PC type (0768-A52) started having USB device problems after upgrading, which makes me reluctant to do so even if I could find a stand alone installer.
Joseph, I discovered the kernel version I was running was 3.2.0-23 -generic-pae, which is for 64 bit i386. I fixed my boot menu to use 3.2.0-70-generic-pae, which is 32 bit, and successfully duplicated the problem. After I installed the latest upstream kernel, the "Freezing of tasks" message disappeared and the PC powered down.
