Manually setting the backlight value to a correct one just fixes the issue until it is decreased again by the system. Seems to occur on Macbook Pro 1G and 2G: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3985139#post3985139 In my case, I'm running Gutsy Ubuntu + ATI fglrx 8.43 (november 2007). The problems occurs with and without compiz fusion effects.
